Who are we?
Global Tourette is a media exchange project created by and for people with Tourette Syndrome and their families, as well as educators, social workers and medical professionals who work with people with people with Tourette.
Global Tourette supports a number of activiites that promote awarenes, understanding, and exchange of knowledge about Tourette and related disorders. These include: documentary video production and exchange; animation and digital media workshops for children, adolescents and their families; and the creation of a web site that connects participants with each other, as well as profesionals and researchers in psychiatry, neurology, social work, and education. Our goal is to promote broader understanding of how we live with Tourette in diverse cultural settings in the US, Argentina, and other international locations.
Global Tourette was initiated in 2005 and is organized by Prof. Brian Goldfarb, PhD of the University of California San Diego (UCSD) with the collaboration of Prof. Lisa Cartwright (UCSD), Eduardo Santana (Doctoral student, UCSD), with the support of many others.
In Argentina the project is coordinated by Emilce Avalos in collaboration with Jörn Schultz, Vanina Hoffmann, Roxana Vicente y Miguel Rivas.
What are the workshops like?
The workshops encourage interaction and exchange amonge children, teens
and families in an atmosphere of creativity and experimentation with digital
media. It is a space of play where kids and adults can choose among material
and activities including animation, expermentation with sound, and game
design. While engaged in thier own productions particpants learn how to
use computer technolgies to express their ideas and feelings. And, at
the same time, the aim is to create an environment in which experiences
can be shared among young people and their families. No prior technical
knowledge is required, there is no fee, and all who are interested are
welcome.
Interviews and Video Projects
We believe that families living with Tourette Syndrome are too often isolated and can gain a great deal from the exchange of ideas and sharing of experiences. One great way to do this is in support groups. Global Tourette aims to extend this through the exchange of video. We record interviews with familes who want to share their experiences with others. And we interview doctors, educators and other professionals who work with people with Tourette Syndrome. We also provide small video cameas to familes who are interested so that they can shoot their own movies and share them on our website.
Where are we?
Global Tourette has been holding workshops and recording interviews in Argentina (primarily in Buenos Aires) and the US (primarily in Southern California) since Summer of 2005. We are continually making efforts and seeking funding to extend our activities new settings.
